Our clinic was founded in 1989 by the late Helmut S. Schmidt, MD, a long time and passionate advocate for sleep medicine on a national level and in the Central Ohio region. Many clinicians and patients considered him a true legacy of kindness, commitment, and professionalism. To the sleep community, Dr. Schmidt was a pioneer. He ran the national certification exam to become sleep specialist for many years before becoming the first president of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. He also was pivotal in helping to establish sleep medicine as a designated medical specialty and led the effort to establish the first National Sleep and Health Awareness Week. A physician with high ethical standards, his approach of medicine was guided by the constant quest of providing the best care to his patients. His “patient comes first” philosophy will forever continue to guide our approach to sleep medicine care at our Institute.
