The Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute is dedicated to delivering the highest quality of Sleep Medicine care for your patients. We appreciate your referrals and enjoy working with you. We take a comprehensive approach in diagnosing and treating all sleep disorders.
There are many sleep labs located in and around Central Ohio with a high degree of variability in the level of care delivered (see Quality). More so than other fields of medicine, this variability of quality is particular to Sleep Medicine, in part because of the limited number of high quality fellowship programs that have been available for physician training.
We pledge to provide the highest level of care for your patients and only perform diagnostic testing procedures when clinically indicated. We feel that some sleep labs are over-utilizing sleep studies (polysomnography) when not clinically indicated. For example, we have found that many of our patients who have come to our clinic for a second opinion are being asked at some sleep labs to systematically return each year for repeat overnight sleep evaluations. This over-utilization adds tremendous cost to the patient and provides limited additional diagnostic or treatment value. If you find that your patients are being asked to return for yearly polysomnographic evaluations, you should question the necessity of such testing and consider a second opinion at our Institute.
We also pledge to implement and manage a comprehensive treatment plan for your patients. It is our policy that, whenever possible, your patients will meet with the Sleep Medicine physician for all office visits. We will communicate the treatment plan with you, typically upon the follow-up office visit or once a long-term treatment plan is initiated.
For your patients on nasal CPAP, we pledge to monitor your patients’ care to maximize compliance or adherence to positive pressure therapy. Published data regarding CPAP compliance have been low with only 50% of patients adhering to therapy. Our patients at the Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute have a compliance rate of over 80%. Obtaining such a high compliance rate with CPAP therapy requires an accurate determination of the patient’s optimal pressure, an emphasis on education to empower the patient to commit to the treatment plan, and intermittent follow-up visits to address patients’ concerns or problems.
At the Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute, we look forward to working with you and your patients. Whether for a first time evaluation or a second opinion, we pledge to treat your patients in an ethical and compassionate manner and to deliver the highest quality of Sleep Medicine care.
